How to create a plan from scratch with Mural’s product strategy software

Step 1: Define your product vision and goals

Begin by discussing the product’s overarching vision and goals. Use Mural’s brainstorming tools like sticky notes and text boxes to capture and organize these high-level ideas in a visual format.

Step 2: Map key stakeholders

Bring together cross-functional team members to gather diverse perspectives. Use Mural’s comment and sticky note features to collect feedback in real time or asynchronously, ensuring all voices are heard.

Step 3: Conduct a comprehensive market analysis

To develop a successful product, start by clearly defining your target market, identifying customer needs, and analyzing competitor strategies. Focus on understanding who you're building for, what problems your product solves, and how it can stand out from the competition.

Use competitor analysis to spot opportunities for differentiation and uncover market gaps. Leverage Mural’s tools, like the SWOT analysis and research and analysis templates, to actively collaborate, organize insights, and adjust your strategy based on real-time market feedback and competitive dynamics.

Step 4: Use product strategy templates to prioritize features

Start by considering how each feature aligns with business goals, customer needs, and overall product vision to gauge its impact. Then, assess the feasibility by looking at factors like technical complexity, resource availability, and timeline constraints. Use Mural’s product prioritization template to visually organize features in a matrix, ranking them based on their impact versus effort.

This allows teams to collaboratively evaluate options, prioritize high-value features, and focus on initiatives that provide the most strategic benefit while remaining realistic to execute.

Step 5: Facilitate alignment workshops with stakeholders

Use Mural’s prioritization matrix during workshops to categorize features or initiatives based on their impact and effort. This helps the team focus on high-priority tasks that align with your strategy. Mural’s facilitation tools — like timers, anonymous voting, and icebreakers — can make workshops more engaging and productive.

Use product strategy templates to simplify your planning process

When teams try to implement a product strategy, they often encounter obstacles such as misalignment, lack of clarity, and communication breakdowns. Mural offers tools that can help teams overcome these common challenges and stay on track.

• Misalignment across teams: Different departments may have varying goals, causing fragmented strategies. But, Mural’s real-time collaboration and visual mapping features allow teams to align on objectives and create a shared understanding of the strategy, ensuring all stakeholders are on the same page.
• Difficulty visualizing complex ideas: Communicating abstract or complex strategies can lead to confusion. This product strategy template helps break down complex strategies into clear, digestible visuals that everyone can understand.
• Lack of clear ownership or accountability: Without clear task delegation, strategies can falter, but Mural’s task assignment and sticky note features help teams define roles and ownership, ensuring accountability and follow-through on strategic initiatives.
• Communication gaps between remote and in-house teams: When teams are distributed, it’s harder to maintain consistent communication. Luckily, Mural's platform specializes in asynchronous collaboration. With features like commenting, tagging, and version history, your team can bridge the gap between remote and in-house teams, keeping everyone informed.‍
• Inefficient feedback loops: Gathering input and iterating on the strategy can be cumbersome. Mural allows for easy feedback collection through sticky notes, reactions, and voting tools, speeding up the iteration process and ensuring strategies evolve with input from all relevant parties.

Key components of an effective strategy for product development

Vision and purpose

A product strategy must be closely aligned with company goals to ensure that the product vision supports broader business objectives and drives growth. This alignment ensures that resources are effectively allocated and that the product delivers value that contributes to the overall success of the organization.

Flexibility

Building flexibility into a product strategy involves creating contingency plans for potential risks or shifts in market conditions. Teams should anticipate alternative scenarios, such as changes in customer needs or unforeseen obstacles, and plan how to pivot if necessary.

Mural helps by offering visual tools like flowcharts, roadmaps, and sticky notes that allow teams to map out alternative paths, update roadmaps in real time, and quickly adapt strategies by shifting priorities and tasks.

User-lead approach

A user-centric approach ensures that the product is designed to meet the real needs, desires, and pain points of customers, which increases its chances of success in the market. User research provides valuable insights into customer behaviors, preferences, and challenges, while personas help teams visualize target users and their specific needs. Journey mapping further guides product development by visualizing the user experience from start to finish, identifying key touchpoints, and areas for improvement.

Mural’s visual tools, like customizable personas, journey maps, and collaborative sticky notes, allow teams to work together in real time, ensuring the product remains aligned with customer needs throughout development. By using these features, teams can continuously adapt and refine strategies based on user feedback and emerging insights.
